ISIS Eye: On the Bund

by isised | May 30, 2013

The Bund is the embankment which runs through Shanghai. This one-mile stretch which runs along the bank of the Huangpu River is the main thoroughfare of the city. It runs past the Russian consulate, the French Concession, the Masonic Club and Shanghai’s most illustrious hotels. Downstream though, small pockets of the old walled city remain yet to be knocked down. This series of photographs – with the famous Oriental Pearl Tower in the background – was taken three weeks into the demolition of one such area. Certain residents, rejecting the offer of Government compensation, had refused to depart. The area has now been entirely cleared to make way for a new hotel.
